My daughter said it’s a gift from “Daddy’s friend.” It’s SO lifelike, it just instantly gave me the creeps…
But then I noticed a tiny hidden button beneath the doll’s clothes. I pressed it, and instead of some doll noise, it played a message: “I love you, Sophie. Remember, Daddy is always with you.”
MY HEART JUST DROPPED. It was the voice of
…my ex-husband — Sophie’s biological father — who passed away three years ago.
I felt my hands go cold. How could a doll have a new recording of his voice? Sophie never even met him; she was just a baby when he died.
Trying to keep calm, I asked her when she got it. She said, “Last week. Daddy’s friend came while you were at work. He told me not to tell you because it’s a secret surprise.”
Every hair on my neck stood up. I checked our doorbell camera — and there he was: a man in a baseball cap, face half hidden, slipping into our house when my mother was watching Sophie in the backyard.
I don’t know who he is yet… but tomorrow, I’m taking the doll to the police. Something tells me this “gift” isn’t just a toy.
