So, me and my husband Paul have been together for over 20 years. We’ve got two kids, Eric, who’s 21, and Mary, who’s 18.
Everything seemed pretty okay with us, just the usual family life, until last week when I accidentally saw a text pop up on Paul’s phone from Amy, Eric’s long-time partner. At first glance, I was thinking, “Oh, she’s just wishing him happy birthday or something.” But, still, something felt off. So, I decided to take a closer look, and oh my gosh, my heart just stopped. There it was, a whole history of texts between them. And my husband? He was texting her about ME, calling me
…“boring,” “naggy,” and even saying he “wished he’d met her first.”
Some messages were harmless on the surface — about movies, random jokes — but others… crossed a line. Compliments about how “beautiful” she looked, hints about meeting up without Eric knowing.
I sat there, shaking, rereading every word. My mind was racing — was this just emotional cheating, or was there more?
I didn’t confront him right away. Instead, I took screenshots of everything and quietly reached out to Amy, asking to meet in person. When we sat down at a café, she looked terrified. She admitted that Paul had been getting more and more suggestive, but she swore she’d never reciprocated and didn’t know how to shut it down without making family gatherings awkward.
That night, I walked into our living room, tossed his phone on the coffee table, and said, “Read your messages out loud. Right now. In front of me. And then tell me how you plan to explain this to your son.”
The color drained from his face.
