I’m always there for family, so when my SIL needed someone to watch little Tommy, I didn’t think twice.
I’ve got this old vase, super special to me — it was Mom’s gift. It’s always sitting right there in the living room. So, I’m on this phone call, and Tommy goes right for the vase. I tell him to leave it alone, but he pushes it right off the stand, and it smashes into pieces. Then he looks right at me and says, “It doesn’t belong to you anyway. We know your secret!” Can you imagine?
Just then, my brother walks in and sees the mess his son created and the look on my face. Of course, I tell him everything, and that weird Tommy’s comment, and to my shock, he’s not surprised! He just sighs really hard and goes, “Yeah, I had to tell you this long ago.
“…Mom wasn’t actually your biological mother.”
My knees just about gave out. He went on to explain that when I was a baby, our father had an affair, and the woman he was with couldn’t keep me — so Mom raised me as her own.
That vase? It originally belonged to my biological mother. My brother said he’d been keeping the truth from me to ‘protect me,’ but apparently Tommy overheard his parents talking about it and decided to lash out.
Now, I’m left grieving two mothers at once — the one I knew and loved, and the one I never got to meet — all because of a kid’s cruel comment.
