My mother-in-law divorced her second husband and moved in with us for a while. Soon after, she started critiquing my parenting, and the kind of wife I am and so on. I asked my husband to speak with her to make it stop. At first, he tried to defend her, but finally he assured me he would talk to her.
Recently, I woke up in the middle of the night, and my husband wasn’t there. When I got up to get a drink, I overheard him talking with his mom. But my heart dropped, and I burst in tears when I heard, “Listen, mom tomorrow I will… “
…call the realtor and put the house on the market.
At first, I thought I must have heard wrong. But then he kept talking — saying how I’d be “fine once we’re in your place” and that “she’ll have to adjust, it’s for the best.”
That’s when it hit me — he wasn’t just planning to have his mom live with us permanently… he was planning to sell our home without even telling me, and move us all into her house.
I felt my chest tighten. This was the home we’d bought together, where we’d raised our kids, where every memory lived. And now he was just… giving it up to please her?
When he saw me standing there, he went pale. He stammered something about “it’s just easier this way” and “mom will help with the kids,” but all I could hear was that he’d made a massive life decision behind my back — and with his mother pulling the strings.
That night, I slept in the guest room. And for the first time in our marriage, I wasn’t sure if I could trust him anymore.
