I SENT MY FIANCE’S GRANDMA A BIRTHDAY GIFT — SOON HE CANCELED THE WEDDING

Jake and I have been together for 5 years, and he recently proposed. His family, especially his sweet grandmother, has been wonderful to me. I adore her!

It was her 80th birthday recently. Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend because I was on an urgent business trip. But I really wanted to surprise her, so I decided to send her a gift.

I couldn’t wait for her to receive it and looked forward to how touched she would be. But on her birthday, my phone flew out of my shaking hands when I received this call from Jake: “I DON’T WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN!” I asked what happened, and he said: ” BECAUSE MY GRANDMA IS…”

in the hospital because of YOU.

I froze. My first thought was—how could sending a gift possibly put her in the hospital?

Jake’s voice was shaking with anger as he explained: apparently, the gift basket I’d sent included an assortment of gourmet cheeses… and I hadn’t realized his grandmother was severely lactose intolerant. She thought I knew, so she happily ate them all. Hours later, she had a serious reaction and ended up needing urgent medical care.

I tried to explain that I never would have sent anything dangerous if I’d known, but Jake wouldn’t hear it. He accused me of “never listening” when his family talks about their health issues, even though I swear I’d never once heard it mentioned.

He called me careless, irresponsible, and said he couldn’t marry someone who “didn’t respect his family’s safety.”

One accidental oversight… and just like that, the wedding was off.
